Relax, Refresh, Rejuvenate . . . How to Age with Grace and Vigor
"The refusal to change makes us old." -- Dr. Irving Oyle "We are always the same age inside." -- Gertrude Stein
TURN BACK THE CLOCK
Most of us want to age gracefully. Actually, if we’re honest about it, a lot of us don’t want to age at all! We’d like to be 25 forever. And now more than ever before, contemporary science and technology have put the dream of prolonging youth within reach. A youthful appearance that belies chronological age is not merely a matter of genes or luck. There are many steps we can take to turn back the clock and stay fit and healthy well into old age.
The good news is that the same habits that make for a healthy lifestyle also slow down the effects of aging. We can now measure markers of biological age such as the length of telomeres, the protective ends of each strand of DNA. Research demonstrates that reducing stress slows the destruction of the telomeres. There are many other measures of biological age as well, like oxidative stress, metabolic rates, and more. We now have ways to track these markers and products to help with turning back the biological clock.
STRESS AND AGING
Even cursory research reveals compelling—and disturbing—evidence that chronic stress ages us more quickly, potentially shaving years off our lives. Here's just one example: “Researchers checked both the telomeres and the stress levels of 58 healthy pre-menopausal women. The stunning result: on average, the immune system cells of highly stressed women had aged by an extra 10 years.” (Chris Woolston, M.S., HealthDay News)
Stress includes physiological factors like toxic build-up, infections, injury, and poor nutrition. Think about how we may be able to manage some of these factors, such as reducing the toxic load on our bodies by quitting cigarettes or reducing excess body weight, both recognized as aging accelerators. There is also the impact of emotional stress; studies have looked at long-term unemployment, anxiety, untreated depression, social isolation, and other issues which take a similar toll in speeding up aging.
Fortunately, we can learn to enjoy many simple, pleasurable lifestyle changes that will help to slow the biological clock. Moderate exercise, meditation, a whole-foods diet rich in fresh vegetables and fruits, and other stress-reducing practices can keep us healthy and youthful for years to come. Doing what gives you joy and a sense of meaningfulness both feels good and keeps you young!
